RAM is a physical device that is used as a memory unit that we can use to read and write simultaneously without considering the physical location of the memory. It cannot be used as a permanent memory storage device, it can only store memory as long as the power is ON. In other memory devices such as HDD the read and write time entirely depends on the physical location of the previously stored memory. To achieve speed Ram uses multiplexing and demultiplexing circuitry to connect the data lines to the respective address location for the process of reading and writing. There are two major types of RAM models. Static RAM and dynamic RAM. Static RAMs are more expensive compared to dynamic RAMs. In static RAM, a single byte of data is stored in six transistor cells. These are very fast and expensive than the normal dynamic RAM. These kinds of SRAMs are used to produce cache memory. The cache memory must be very fast and consume less energy compared to the dynamic RAM.
Dynamic RAM stores a single bit of data in the transistor and capacitor pair which stores either 0 or 1. The transistor changes the state to either 1 or 0. Dynamic RAM is used for predominant memory in computers. Both Static and Dynamic RAM are volatile memories. The data stored in this storage will get erased when you turn off the power. Even though there are multiple purposes for RAM in a computer, their predominant usage is for volatile memory.
