Optical Image Stabilization means stabilizing an image even though it is shaky and in low light. When a still image is taken by a moving photographer the image might look blurry. But if the camera has an Optical Image Stabilization feature in it then the image will be automatically stabilized and there will be no blurriness in the image. The camera will deploy a special algorithm that stabilizes the image or the video.
OIS is not only used in professional cameras but also in mobile phone cameras, binoculars, telescopes, etc. Cameras do optical image stabilization easily by varying the optical path that leads to the sensor. The distance which is to be varied is calculated by the lens itself. OIS feature makes it easy to take good quality images by hand holding the still camera or video camera. Most of the camera companies such as Canon, Nikon, Olympus have introduced OIS in their latest camera models.
OIS is called in different names in different brands. Canon calls it an image stabilizer, Konica calls it anti-shake, Nikon calls it vibration reduction, Tamron calls in vibration compensation.
